The Montesa Cota 247 Trials Mark 1 was the first production Montesa trials motor cycle, imported and introduced into the UK from August 1968 as a direct and
successful competitor to the ‘Bultaco Sherpa’ This example is a Mark 2, first registered new in the UK on 3rd October 1969.
The Mark 2 is visually the same as the Mark 1 but has an improved gearbox and an Amal Concentric carburettor instead of the Spanish IRZ.
The vehicle was found in a dilapidated but complete state about 15 to 20 years ago by the late Mr Ian Fairhead of Lincoln in the shop of Ron Edwards Motor Cycles of Cullompton, Devon.
Ian was a retired squadron leader engineer formerly of the Royal Air Force. The present owner purchased the machine directly from Ian. Nothing more is known about the history of the machine.
Ian completely renovated the machine and it has had very little use since.
PMR 11H is the original number when registered new and would have been issued by the Swindon Motor Tax Office.
The cylinder barrel has been re-lined with a cast iron liner back to standard size.
The glass fibre petrol tank / seat unit has been lined with ‘Caswells’ to resist ethanol fuel but will require careful future use to avoid damage from modern petrol:-
Never store petrol for length time in the glass fibre tank.
Always drain to the last drop any residual fuel after use by removing and inverting the tank.
After draining, leave the cap off to vent the tank.
Always use ‘super unleaded’ fuel which will generally contain a minimum of ethanol.
Because of these precautions the tank has been left in a dry state.
